The beautiful city of Hergceg-Novi is located at the foot of mount Orien, at the mouth of the Boka-Kotor bay and is definitely one of the youngest cities on the Adriatic coast. Herceg Novi is one of the most beautiful yet underrated cities in Montenegro, that is the perfect destination for a coastal adventure. It’s one of the least visited forts in Herceg Novi because of its location and dilapidated state, but it offers fantastic views over the bay and a history lesson. Upper part of the city, which has the old town and where the main street (Njegoševa) runs through, and the lower part, which has the beaches and seaside promenade. Once you’ve seen the old town, follow the signs above the old town to visit Savina Monastery for other impressive views over the bay and the sea.

HOW TO GET TO HERCEG NOVI

The best ways to get to Herceg Novi Montenegro are by plane and car. Savina monastery is situated 2½ km east of Apartments Pax Herceg Novi. Popular points of interest near Apartments Pax include Igalo Beach, Herceg Novi Clock Tower and Forte Mare Fortress. During a vacation in Herceg Novi you will enjoy a picturesque Baroque old town, discover some beautiful sights and also the beaches are ideal for swimming. At regular intervals along the length of Setaliste Pet Danica you will find steep flights of steps that lead up into the main areas of Herceg Novi and Topla. The months of June, July, August are when the city comes alive, everything is open, and all the tours are running. The Savina monastery, approximately 2 km east from the city center has three beautiful Orthodox churches and splendid views of the bay. A city best explored by foot as you can wander down by the sea, up the stairs, over the square and through old town, or explore on a rental bike and cruise along the over 5km long seaside promenade.

Swimming — The city has some great pebble and many concrete beaches, although most of them are quite crowded during high season. Heading to Kanli Kula is perfect if you wish to see the city from new heights and want to explore the historic fortress. Monastery Savina The medieval orthodox monastery complex situated next to the city, on a hill in the lush Mediterranean vegetation. The city was founded in 1382 and then three hundred years it was ruled by the Turks. In the last century it was part of Yugoslavia, and now the city belongs to the European state of Montenegro.

Where To Eat In Herceg Novi

The stretch of promenade between the harbor at Herceg Novi and Igalo is lined with cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops. Setaliste Pet Danica makes for a pleasant seaside stroll between Herceg Novi and Igalo and also offers a good selection of restaurants and bathing areas. The Jadranka restaurant has a terrace overlooking the sea and serves Mediterranean and international dishes and drinks. Between Igalo and Meljine is a 7-kilometre promenade that winds past pebbled beaches, paved swimming areas, cute little fruit stands and a multitude of beachside restaurants. Dining is available in the hotel restaurants and bars serving international and local cuisine and drinks. The best restaurant turned out to be right next to us on the beach.

With plenty of restaurants, small shops, and a selection of bars, the Old Town keeps locals and travellers busy and the nightlife, especially at the weekend, buzzes throughout the walls of the Old Town. This city oasis of greenery and blue, is an ideal place to relax thanks to the beautiful beaches, Mediterranean climate and excellent gastronomic offer authentic to this climate. Gastronomy, as a significant aspect of the art of living, is an important urbanity factor of towns in the Boka Bay, and one that is greatly influenced by social, economic and historical circumstances. Because of it, we can classify the Adriatic— Boka Cuisine as a part of the Mediterranean gastronomy.

Things to do in Herceg Novi

Take a relaxing boat ride and experience the wonder of the Blue Cave, one of the most beautiful and rare attractions of its kind in the Mediterranean. While you are in the old town you will definitely explore the main attractions and landmarks. Staying close to the main attractions is always a good idea as it makes it easy to explore the area and to join tours and day trips. Thanks to its tumultuous and long history, Herceg Novi is a mixture of interesting architecture, attractions, and traditions that have all left their mark on the city.

The Bay of Kotor is one of the most popular attractions in the area as this is regularly named as one of the most beautiful bays in the world. The Kanli Kula fortress dominating the old town doubles as an open-air theatre and is worth visiting mainly for the splendid views of the town and the Boka Kotorska bay. Kanli Kula is another fortress in Herceg Novi Montenegro similar to Fort Mare. Kanli Kula is also home to an amphitheater and in the summer months hosts the annual film festival. The Bosnian king Tvrtko I Kotromanic, in 1382 established a new town in the bay of Topla, as a competitor to Dubrovnik in the trade of salt. Tito liked the area so much that he ordered a villa to be built (one of a dozen around former Yugoslavia!), but unfortunately he visited only four times. The villa was originally built for Josip Broz Tito, then-president of Yugoslavia, in 1976 because he was getting treated at the nearby Igalo Institute.

Things to do in Montenegro

I recommend hiring a car but taxis are cheap in Montenegro so that’s a strong option too. If you want to try sailing or just want to go sailing in Herceg Novi, you can go with Montenegro Outdoors – a couple that offers both sailing, kayaking and boat trips. Those wishing to explore the country will have to travel far to nearby tourist destinations in Montenegro or pass around the entire Bay of Kotor, or ferry through Kamenari-Lepetane. Similar to Lustica Bay and Porto Montenegro marina, the city of Herceg Novi will also get its first luxury yacht marina that will be located in the village called Kumbor. If you’re willing to rent a car in Montenegro, you could drive there yourself in just over two hours, but be careful on the winding roads!
