Air Pinch Valves in Operation

Date Added: October 23, 2011 07:43:49 PM

An air pinch valve is a means of controlling a material flow by the application of air pressure at the control inlet. The internal rubber or compound sleeve is collapsed, which provides an immediate and complete material flow shut-off. The sleeve closes fully, even when the material flow is of a large particle matter, an abrasive substance or corrosive material. In the open position, the internal sleeve permits full and unobstructed flow of the material with minimum turbulence. The rubber or compounded sleeves of the air pinch valve are easily replaced economically when worn, resulting in the least possible downtime.

This particular type of valve is suitable for many varied, specialized and demanding applications. The materials, from which they are constructed, depend upon the individual nature of the application as presented by the user. The sleeve elastomer, a critical aspect of the valve, is available in a variety of performance and application related forms, dependent on the material being processed.

The air pinch valve is a precision-made component and is able to be placed in situations where other valves, which may be prone to corrosion or are manufactured from heavy metal valves, cannot operate. Adding to this is the fact they are rugged in design and function, with the further advantage of being economical. This valve will provide a user with a rapid and positive shut-off facility, for most processed industrial materials. These may include liquids, dry flow substances and even highly viscous materials.

The unique flow-through design of an air pinch valve contributes to their versatility and the provision of a fast operation. These benefits are further supported as they provide a full and unobstructed material flow with the required full closure. Another positive consideration is that they can be mounted into a myriad of positions, including being fully submerged.

One criterion for a user of an air pinch valve is the operating pressure. This can vary and will depend on the elastomer of the internal sleeve and size of the valve. The pressure range can be from a moderate vacuum, to a maximum of 90 Psi, when it is air controlled. The pressure control required is generally 20 – 40 Psi greater than the pressure of the flow material. However, the manufacturer’s recommendations must be adhered to, but the utilizing of excessive air pressure over that resulting in total valve closure, will have an impact on the lifetime of the sleeve. Again in general, it is not recommended that actuation pressure over 90 Psi is employed.

It is usual for an air pinch valve to be in an open position and constant air pressure will be required to obtain complete closure. Accordingly, any loss of that pressure will permit the opening of the valve. Should therefore a sleeve failure occur, the controlled material will be able to enter the actuation system.

Perhaps the most important and valued benefits for users of an air pinch valve is that they ensure a free material flow with a minimum amount of frictional resistance. This type of valve is 100% leak free, without the creation of blockages and is of a low net weight. The design of the valve casing makes for a minimum consumption of compressed air, with a saving in energy. Therefore, there is an assurance of a specified lipped fold pattern, to the air pinch valve sleeve. This particular fold pattern will provide a complete sealing of the product flow, with the enclosure of even large solid materials by the sleeve. In these circumstances, a user can be certain of tight sealing.
